Most people would look at a poker chip and think it’s just like any other poker chip and there’s really nothing special about it. To the poker lover though each and every poker chip set is in face different and these poker players will have their preferences when it comes to the chips they want to use in play. There are so many unique looking chips worldwide it’s really quite astonishing.
In the beginning.
During the pioneering days of gambling these disc shaped chips we are all used to were not around and therefore an assortment of other objects of small sizes such as pieces of clay, wood and occasionally, when played by the more fortunate people, small amounts of gold were even used as chips. The poker chips that we use today were not introduced into the game until late in the 1800’s. These chips were made as a method for keeping count in poker and they were made of a clay based composite. These prehistoric clay chips were standard for an extensive time and it wasn’t until the 1940’s that the manufacture of plastic chips began and became vastly available to the public.
In more modern times.
Chips today are most commonly comprised of 3 core materials one of which has survived the test of time as it was used back in the early days, this was clay. The second material commonly used in the manufacture of poker chips is plastic. For beginners the plastic chips would be the best to use as they are the most affordable option and are also light in weight and easily damaged. Some chips are made of a metal core. This metal core means that they are heavier than the plastic chips and not a susceptible to damage. These chips with metal cores are great for the home based poker players as they provide the player with the feeling of authentic casino chip but are not overly expensive. Clay based chips are the most expensive kind and can not be found as easily as their plastic counterparts. Custom made clay composite chips are used in the casinos, usually the casinos logo is inscribed onto the chips and the chips are protected by copyright laws.
Purchasing a set.
Poker chips come in a variety of colors such as black, red, green, white and pink and can be purchased in sets which usually include 2 decks of cards, 2 dice and also a set number of chips. The cases of chip sets are quite elegant looking being a metal case with a velvet inner lining as added protection for the chips.
Because of the popularity of poker, purchasing poker chips is no great endeavour. Online poker websites and forums, casinos and other sites on the internet are just some of the places you can purchase chip sets. Shop around for the best bargain and be sure to buy enough chips for everyone if you plan on playing a friendly home game or two as it is much better to have too many chips than to not have enough.
